Shaolin A.R.Ts
(Adapted Realistic Techniques)
There are many benefits in the study of Shaolin martial arts that will improve the quality of life for disabled people. The goal of Shaolin A.R.Ts is to provide a framework within which each person can customize their training based upon personal goals and ability. There are similarities between Shaolin stretching and strength training, and traditional physical therapy. Shaolin techniques however, develop the body and mind simultaneously. Individuals with profoundly limited mobility can use simple breathing and visualization techniques to affect positive change. The Eastern belief in the existence of Chi and its circulation through the body, used in conjunction with traditional physical therapy, provides a means to increase the focus of personal will power. This concept has been shown effective by persons with Cerebral Palsy practicing Tai Chi. the movements and postures present in the moving meditation known as Tai Chi were shown to massage the muscles and joints as the practitioner moves, as well as increase over all mobility. The breathing techniques improved respiratory functions, while meditation relieved stress. Shaolin A.R.Ts offers much more than just Tai Chi. Within the Shaolin system are hundreds of traditional martial art forms each emphasizing the previously mentioned benefits, and concepts in their own way. Many were developed by observing the movements of animals, and adapting them to the human body. Shaolin A.R.Ts is based upon this inherent adaptability. Shaolin A.R.Ts presents a platform that not only provides the benefits of traditional physical therapy, but also serves as an expressive motivational outlet. Physiological studies have shown that all persons engaging in some form of athletic pursuit, regardless of ability, experienced a significant rise in self confidence. An added benefit of Shaolin A.R.Ts training is self defense. This is useful because unfortunately, some see those with special needs as potentially easy targets for crime and abuse.
